Values For A New Age

VALUES FOR A NEW AGE reflects the investigation of observable phenomena by science and pseudo-science. Playing with new technology and sham seance trickery, the piece questions notions of empirical research: evidence, experience and documentation.

On entering the gallery space, the viewer is confronted by monitors placed in front of a boarded off box space. Each screen shows a different view of a wineglass moving around on a table.
To the left of the monitors, there is a peephole enabling the viewer to look inside. As the viewer looks through the spy-hole, a sensor ends a signal to the mechanism moving the glass, and it falls still. The viewer never sees the wineglass moving when they try to observe it in real space, they can only see it moving in tele-space, relayed live on the monitors from the corresponding cameras within.

The viewing sensor excludes any possibility of the viewer actually observing the glass in motion. Proof of its movements can be seen however, when the viewer returns to the spyhole, causing the glass to rest further along in its cycle, and in a different place. All this will be relayed to the monitors outside the space in real time. This creates a further intellectual uncertainty, the source, methods and basic believability of the evidence are all offered up for questioning.

Far from empirical science and technological progress damping the enthusiasm for magical readings, the use and improvement of technology (whether big budget special effects, or instantaneous domestic digitality) does in fact trade on the sense of awe and the uncanny previously provided by mystical phenomena.
